About
True Smith (she/they) is a stage director based in Denver. She is grateful to live her childhood dream of bringing her imagination to reality every day. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, True strives to bring a unique perspective to the stage, blending cultural heritage with innovative theatrical practices. Her work is not just about the end product but about creating safe and collaborative artistic environments.
True is committed to using consent-forward, trauma-informed artistry alongside specialized techniques involving somatics, breath work, and mindfulness. After relocating to Colorado to pursue her education, True completed the directing curriculum at the University of Northern Colorado, where they Co-Founded Directors Inspiring Riveting Theatre (D.I.R.T), the most prolific producing student group on campus to this date. Her dedication to pushing the boundaries of theatre and decolonizing traditional practices is a source of inspiration, leading her to direct contemporary and timely shows such as Lungs by Duncan Macmillan, Plano by Will Arbery, and Avocado by Eve Ensler, along with numerous new work developments.
True's passion is directing thought-provoking and relevant productions that serve a larger purpose: the community. Following a summer internship with Diversity in the Arts in Denver, True joined Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center as a full-time staff member.
In addition to her position, directing and intimacy coordination, True's goal is to be a multifaceted creative force with their plays and poetry.
